august glossybox 3rd birthday box review

Saturday, September 06, 2014

I have been meaning to post about this box since it landed on my doorstep, but better late than never I guess. I am back from my holiday so I will be posting more periodically, as I have a mountain of things to write about!

First thing to mention about the 3rd birthday box from Glossybox is their subtle redesign - it has a slightly smaller and sharper edged box giving it a luxurious high quality feeling, and a new folded content card which is perfectly sized and very easy to read through. All this and beautifully wrapped with ribbon as always!

1) L'amour Lalique Eau de Parfum (2ml Sample)

"The fragrance offers an olfactory declaration of love. It targets a woman with a radiant personality, eager to discover the world and enchanting people around her. The citrus freshness of bergamot, the elegant tenderness of a rosebud and the softness of neroli deliciously burst forth at the top. The heart, crucial in a love story, enriches the fragrance with a bouquet of sumptuous white flowers: tuberose, gardenia and jasmine petals. The base highlights dry, warm cedar. The creamy softness of luscious sandalwood rests on a bed of addictive musks."

I liked the packaging and the presentation of this sample, but the scent just wasn't my cup of tea, I found it too floral-soapy. It wasn't too bad, but for the price tag I think there are plenty more delicious alternatives I would rather wear.

£67 (Full size 50ml) - Boots

2) Philip Kingsley Elasticizer (Full size 250ml)

"A luxurious pre-shampoo and conditioning treatment, Philip Kingsley Elasticizer nourishes the hair cuticle with intensive moisture, helping to restore suppleness, bounce and elasticity. Enriched with UV filters to protect the hair and prevent colour fade, it gives visible results from the very first application, and is designed not to weigh down the hair. Great for damaged hair, it will leave your locks looking lustrous and shiny."

This is a product I was looking forward to trying out - after hearing many raving reviews about it.. It was originally developed especially for Audrey Hepburn to create bounce and shine without weighing down the hair. This is a pre - shampoo treatment, so make sure you leave enough time/have enough magazines to read while in the bath waiting for it to work before carrying on with your usual shampoo and conditioning routine.
After using this product I am not sure what I expected to see when I looked in the mirror, maybe Audrey-Hepburn-esque bounce and refinement, unfortunately I wasn't blown away by the results. For me this did leave my hair shiny and looking healthy - but no noticeable difference to the usual conditioning masks I use (Tigi Bedhead Peppermint Hair Mask and the wallet-friendly The Body Shop Rainforest Moisture Hair Butter).

£38 (250ml Anniversary Kit) -

3) Figs & Rouge Mini Hand Cream Mango Mandarin (Mini 80ml)

"Enriched with shea butter, natural antioxidants and algea extract for beautifully fragrant and indulgent skincare. Softens, nourishes & thoroughly pampers hands throughout the day"

I was excited to see this product in the box, as Figs & Rouge make some of the most fantastic skincare products, I am a huge fan of theirs. I already know how great the formula of these hand creams are - non greasy, smooth, easy to apply.. I featured them in one of my previous blog posts Top 3 Hand Moisturisers where I placed them #1. This mini size is great for me to throw in my makeup bag, and the scent is delicious, very fruity and summery, i love it!

£2.37 (20ml) -

4) Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara (12ml)

"The i love extreme mascara’s "crazy" sister – for even more volume! the deep-black, creamy texture covers each individual lash with color and the extra-large plastic brush provides sensational volume. the mascara container is designed in the usual i love-colors, except they’re the other way around – in a cool pink with black lettering. opthalmologically tested."

First impressions of this product weren't particuarly great, the tube looked cheap and the wand didn't seem to have very long bristles - looked to me like it could be a bit of a nightmare to apply. I hadn't heard of Essence products before so did a quick bit of Googling and came across some pretty good reviews on this product, so I thought perhaps I shouldn't judge a book by its cover first off..
However, after trying it out I must admit my first impressions were pretty spot on, for me the formula was too thin, making it clump immediately leading to a bit of a mess (I think I have created less mess before whilst sneezing with my liquid eyeliner mid-line.) Just not a winner in my book, but it is priced cheaply so I guess thats a plus point!

£2.80 - wilko

5) Kryolan for Glossybox Highlighter Cashmere (4.5g)

"This highlighter is a versatile, lightweight cream with a gloss finish. It provides cheekbones, lips, and other parts of the skin with a beautiful velvety shine."

I had never used any Kryolan products before, so I was intrigued to try this out.. and wow! What a great product, I have used it quite a lot since receiving it and I love how it gives my skin a subtle dewy glow, its a light product and you only need to use a dab so I can see this pot lasting ages even at the rate I am currently using it. This product perfectly captures what I love about Glossybox, introducing me to brands and products I have never heard about or thought of trying before, I am tempted to purchase this product in another colour in the future, very impressed!

£12.95 -

6) Yves Rocher Pink Nail Polish (3ml)

"Mini polish - maxi colour! Part of a palette of nude, vibrant or glamorous shades, slightly shimmery or intensely lacqured. Their mini format lets you succumb to the temptation of all the colours guilt-free!"

This was a 'Birthday Bonus' in the box, so naturally the colour is a rose-pink to reflect the Glossybox branding. This really is a tiny pot, perfect for a couple of applications, and the size is useful to keep in your bag for touch ups. I usually go for more bold and bright colours in nail varnish though so I wasn't too keen on the colour. The consistency was good though, went on smoothly but did require more than one coat, and it didn't chip as soon as I had expected so I was pleasantly surprised by its durability.

£3.60 -

All in all I was very happy with my August Glossybox, and I am looking forward to Septembers box..
